"Betwixt & Between" focuses on landscape: how the element of awe can lead to a personal, emotional experience. Informed by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows, I employ the visual vocabulary of beauty to queer the traditional definition of the sublime. In this body of work, the sublime and the beautiful are not separate and immutable; they coexist in a personal and intimate space. This body of work occupies a liminal space: depictions of landscapes that are not real, landscapes that are ungrounded, unlocatable, and moreover, ephemeral. I employ the visual tension of straight vertical and horizontal lines juxtaposed with soft, undulating ones to highlight that feeling of uncertainty.
